July & August 2011

It’s been a while since you last heard from us but we’ll blame the heat, we always blame the heat and it has been hot the last while. We’ve been very busy traveling around and July and August have been hectic months for us. We got to play at 3 new festivals, the first ever Annapolis Irish Fest, the Saltwater Irish Festival and the John Boyle O’Reilly Festival up in Springfield MA. These festivals were absolutely brilliant and you can check out the photos we took at them on our Facebook page (we’ll be putting them up on the website in the next while) We also returned to Cape Cod and had a great after-party in the Sons Of Erin and the Cleveland Festival was even better than last year if that is possible. It was great to meet up with all our friends and we really enjoyed the Sun night session back at the hotel. Thankfully the only disaster that befell us over the last few weeks was car trouble in the Poconos. We were on our way back to NYC from Cleveland when lo and behold the car started making a strange loud noise. Anyway to make a long story short and also the fact that we know nothing about cars it ended up being something about bearings in the air-con compressor .............oh we had forgotten to tell you we had been without air conditioning in the car and were all sporting beautiful red ‘partial’ sunburns, you all know the lovely stripes you get when the windows are down and the sun’s partially roasting you. As is said we had air-con ‘4-75’. i.e. 4 windows down going at 75 mph. Anyway, back to the loud noise, we pulled in to a gas station in Stroudsburg and met a really amazing guy called Chris who brought us to his car shop and got us back on the road again. We can’t thank him enough.
Onto Milwaukee.....this year it was extra special for us as our mam was also performing. We decided to drive from NYC to Milwaukee as our Dad wanted a road trip. Thankfully both vehicles had air conditioning and the journey was great fun. Milwaukee was as Milwaukee always is........amazing........ and I have to say the highlight for us (apart from mam singing) was the three hand reel we danced with Ed Ward on the Liene Rock stage on Sun evening. I want to apologize to Ed again for our bad dancing. I’m blaming the big long skirt I had on, I don’t know what Joans excuse is!! On the food front we got to Bob Evans twice which made Gráinne very happy. On the journey home we stopped at the aforementioned Bob E’s and it happened to be right beside Notre Dame University and so we had to go take a look. Gráinne bought herself a button so she will be be sporting it soon on one of her hats.
After we got back to NYC we realized that we had missed an earthquake and as most of you probably know a hurricane was heading for NYC. Needless to say our gigs were cancelled for Sat(they are in the process of being re-scheduled as I type) and I have to say that we were rather uneasy on Sat night as our building actually shook with the wind gusts. We really ‘lucked’ out in the city but our heart goes out to all the people who suffered badly in the storm. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
